A Phantom Malice

It seems to me that when I look upon a paper stand,
that this planet which I call home is doomed by every hand.

As glossy mags and tall broadsheets report the latest woes,
of murder, death and infamy enough to curl my toes.

And TV is of little help in breaking up the gloom,
as they report in full colour atrocities of doom.

The internet seems worst of all at spreading doubt and fear,
with sites and links that glorify in bringing forth a tear.

Yet having travelled far and wide I've lived a different life,
That's far removed from all this vile bitterness and strife.

I've seen such sights to make me gasp in wonder and delight,
and met kind folk whom I hold dear and think of every night.

But is my life not of the norm, and am I truly blessed?
Or is it just that all that's good is hidden by the rest?

The glass half empty does contain the same as one half full,
so grip the rope of life I say and give it one big pull.

And pay no heed to those who try to chain you up inside.
Be free of hate and venture forth, you've got no need to hide.
